My Mini B-Day Vacay

My Mini Birthday Vacay

My Mini Birthday Vacay

Last Friday started my mini b-day vacay which has been unusually interesting. This is the first year in I am not sure how many years I am single. It is the first year some really important people were missing out on the festivities which I am both happy and sad about. This year’s vacation has been quite different from previous years for one too many reasons and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about all of that. While trying to reflect on the differences (as birthdays do tend to make us or maybe it’s just me reflect on the years prior) I realized there were some consistencies that I think I turn to on almost all vacations. I was wondering if everyone does this, even world travelers. I can’t be the only highly routined individual even when relaxing, can I? I know whilst most people plan far away trips to get away from it all I actually prefer to say home. It is one of my favorite places to be. Shoot, I spend so much time cleaning and organizing it I should want to be home all of the time unfortunately I get to spend next to no time there.  Now that I have left you in suspense of what my vacation go to activities are I will divulge to you my comforting routines that keep my never resting mind mildly at ease.

1. Watching My Favorite Movies
Sliding Doors is almost always the first. I cannot go very long with out not watching it. There are so many reasons I love this movie that I don’t think I will ever get over it.
Pride & Prejudice is a must but the 2005 version. I have mentioned why I swoon for this particular verion in previous posts. Read, learn and repeat. Another must is usually Jane Eyre
as well asWuthering Heights (People don’t write with that kind of beauty anymore.) and then if I have tired out other Bronte sister or Jane Austen remakes I usually turn to Will Ferrell marathon which never disappoints.

2. Cleaning Out The Clutter and Reorganizing
I give myself this project almost every time I have a few days off at a time. I don’t know if that is strictly my OCD getting the better of me or some subconscious metaphor explaining my life and existence. It is probably the last bit of Catholic in me that refuses to be purged and wants me to punish myself for spending so much money all of the time on pretty things. I went shopping for organizational furniture as well which is something I promised myself I wouldn’t do but I couldn’t help it. Everything has a place and everything should be in it at all times! This from a woman who apparently now has 4 pets! So you can imagine how often my day is sucked up by cleaning and organizing.

3. Cook Like My Life Depends On It
I usually compile a list of recipies to make while I have the time. My favorite place to find fun recipeis is Tablespoon.com. I am on there daily trying to see what goodies I can find.  I like to cook large amounts of food at one time and freeze or give away whatever I won’t eat right away.  I do not know what it is about a fridge full of homemade food that makes me happy other than I am a fatty but nevertheless it does. I like to experiment with cooking and feel a certain sense of accomplishment when the recipe comes out right.

4. Spend time with the Furbs.
I work long hours and weekends are so busy I often feel like a neglectful pet owner because they spend more time with out me than with. I try to give each one their very own love and attention daily but some days are more hectic than others. Sometimes one pet seems to need it more than others but when I have time off I get to sleep in with them, snuggle them anytime I want, play with them and generally harrass them until they hate me and wish I were at work all day.

5. Buy Myself Birthday Presents
I have been buying myself birthday presents since I moved out of my parents house in my very early 20′s. The list usually goes as follows: a new Betsey Johnson bag or 2, a few new outfits shoes included, bath and body stuff and usually some spruce my house up, which probably clearly doesn’t help with the aforementioned clutter I spend too much time trying to alleviate my living space from.  I make sure all of my prezzies are delivered before my vacation begins so I have it ready and waiting for any birthday week festivities.

What Are You Watching This Summer

I can never seem to watch anything at the right time when it is on. I also never remember to record anything on DVR which is just plain frustrating I know but thank goodness for the inventions of Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime or else I would miss every important show ever in the history of ever! I also like being able to catch up on series I never had a chance to get into. That always makes me happy. There is sometimes nothing better than having a few days of sitting in bed, pigging out and watching a series from start to finish with no interruptions! Now for what shows I am obsessing over this summer…..hold on to your socks everybody:

Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 5 is my new addiction. I never really cared about the New Jersey or New York installments of the Housewives empire. Last season I caught the tail end and happened to see Teresa on Celebrity Apprentice and I actually liked her….on her own show….not so much. Either way I lurve lurve lurve it! I don’t know why I didn’t start watching it sooner. I am generally late to the party when it comes to television shows. I cannot keep up with all of the mind-numbing goodness going on on all of these different channels. I hope that this season brings with it just as much drama and crazy bs and any other season before it because boy do I heart these ladies!

Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove is one of the series that Nexflix put out on their own. It is oober good! The series description is “In the shadows of a rusted Pennsylvania steel town, the mangled body of a teenage girl is discovered. As they hunt for a monster among them, rumors mount and many of the eccentric residents become suspects, from the newly arrived gypsy family to the wealthy Godfrey clan. In the twisted world of Hemlock Grove, everyone hides a dark secret.” I really like the characters but was a little disappointed with the season finale. I expected a little more but it wasn’t terrible. I am hoping that the series was popular enough to warrant a second season so it can get bigger and better because there are some things that I need to figure out.  I do like that Netflix can get away with a bit more than normal network television which makes the possibilities for this series very interesting.  Let us all cross our fingers that season 2 if there is one is super duper awesome.

Long Island Princesses is glorious. I know that I might be biased because I grew up in Long Island and although I can’t really identify with this idiots I know I have seen them all over the place. I find it funny instead of trying to compete with the likes of the Jersey Shore by choosing the typical Italian you find on Long Island, which btdubs is never to be confused with Shore going/NJ living Italians EVER, they went a different route and chose the typical Long Island Jewish Princess which to be honest I feel is much more Jersey but what can you do. Either way every one of these hot messes I absolutely love to bits! Joey is my favorite and not because she isn’t the super rich girl aspiring to be like the others but because she holds her own and seems to have it the most together. I do think she has a bit of a chip on her shoulder but I am not completely sure I blame her. If you haven’t seen this train wreck of a show yet you are missing out on some amazeball summer fun!

Twisted

Twisted

Twisted is another ABC Family gem so far! They are just crankin out some good shows! I know I might be too “old” but I don’t care I love their shows. The only thing I really don’t love is Jo’s (one of the main characters) hair. It is just plain stupid. I am not even sure what look they were attempting to go for other than icky because it is just gross and unstylish in every way. Even the grunge era wouldn’t accept it. The shows description is “The new ABC Family original mystery series Twisted centers on a charismatic 16-year-old with a troubled past, who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood. He becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is surprisingly found dead in her home.” What is left out is that he recently reconnects because he has been away for the past 5 years for killing his aunt while his 2 besties were outside playing and no one knows why he did it. He has yet to ever tell anyone the reason. If they can keep the story going without it getting boring or too convoluted I am all in!

Spring Artist Selection

It has been far to long since I highlighted some of my favorite artists that I have been swooning over. Some of these are oldies and others are newbies I have recently stumbled upon that I cannot get enough off!!! Although I have studied art for years I seem to be attracted similarly composed/styled artwork. I do not know why other than I like what I like and although I appreciate many different styles and art forms I find myself constantly drawn to cartoonish/dark/vintage-ish and often Asian inspired pieces. I know my preferences my not be everyone’s cup of tea but you don’t have to love them. My only hope is that my finds will entice you to search out your own favorite artists and maybe find something or someone you never would have otherwise.

Where I Rest

Where I Rest

Audrey Kawaski is one of my all time favorite artists. There are few pieces of hers that I haven’t liked. I really love the fact that she does most of her paintings on wood. The muted colors she uses on the wood are beautiful. I generally like very bold and bright colored pieces but Audrey’s pieces are so fluid and alluring. I love her style and imagination.  Many of her pieces are of a woman or women in different scenes where the expressions they display are tantalizing.  Whether they are in a lusty moment or look frightened the expressions still have a very sensual feeling to them.

A Perfect Vacuum

A Perfect Vacuum

Jeremy Geddes is famous for his floating people usually Astronauts but A Perfect Vacuum happens to be one of my favorites. His images are so vivid and detailed. It is like you are looking through an actual window. Jeremy Geddes has other styles as well each very different but all so interesting. It seems so simple to plop a floating person in a scene and call it art but his compositions and crispness make his images exciting and almost relaxing. Like a moment in time where you can just float.

Let's Eat Cake

Let's Eat Cake

Brandi Milne’s work is very cartoon, vintage and or retro, creepy. She has many fairy tale inspired pieces that hint at late 70′s style illustrations. I really enjoy her pieces. Brandi’s pieces are very busy and detailed but the long lines present in most of her pieces seem to give the atmosphere very fluid movement. Most of her art seems dark and almost tragic but not in a sad way if that makes sense. Kind of like a Tim Burton movie makes you happy.

Silent Partner

Silent Partner

Ray Caesar, I accidentally happened to only just find when searching for a sold out print I really wanted by another artist. I am so very happy I did! Most of his paintings are portaits which I always love. They are all very classical in style but with, as per my usual taste, a dark, twisty, sexy side to them.  Often I see that the subject in his paintings have octopus-like attributes and I absolutely lurve octupus’.  Ray’s pieces are quite expensive (as they should be they are beautiful) and as much as I love them I think unless he releases an inexpensive print run I will be sans a Ray Caesar piece for quite some time! Booooo!

More of My Winter Playlist

I know I keep saying this but this new play list is the best yet! I cannot stop listening to these songs over and over. I love playing songs until I almost hate them. I am not sure why but that is my habit which is probably why my play lists are always so short. These songs all keep me in the pre-Spring moment. I can almost smell the awesomeness.

The Smiths This Charming Man
The Smiths are obviously not a new band but they are one of my all time favorites. This Charming Man is on the top 5 lists of my favorite songs in the universe! There is no better for me. The music combined with the lyrics make me bouncy and excited everytime I hear it. I have yet to play this song out until I can’t deal with listening to it ever again. If you have never heard of The Smiths you should look into them right away. I generally like sad depressing tunes but this is one of their lest suicidal feeling, I promise.

Rilo Kiley – Silver Lining I have never heard of Rilo Kiley before but it came up on my Pandora (as usual) and I downloaded it immediately. This is my number 1 top played song for the past 2 weeks. I refuse to stop listening to it until I know every word by heart and can sing it with out the music. The song seems like a girl power song but way cooler. I really like the music the lyrics are just an added bonus.

The Bird and The Bee – Heard It On The Radio
The Bird and The Bee are quickly becoming my favorite band ever! Their music makes me get up and dance almost uncontrollably. I know many of their songs I have heard are covers but I don’t care they do them almost better than the original. Not to mention those MF’s are way hot! You need to google them ASAP! Their electronic backgrounds make everything they to light, upbeat and airy! LOVES THEM!!!!!

Deep Cotton – We’re Far Enough from Heaven Now We Can Freak Out (Dirty Virgin) [Explicit] I am not sure if you remember that speaker commercial with the group of people in suits dancing on what looked like astro-turf but the song in the commercial was soo fun I had to find it. It took me a little bit but I finally found it and am glad I did. I do wish I had some astro-turf to display my sweet moves but nonetheless I will make due with my carpet at home! This song is super fun and perfect for cleaning the house because once it is on you can’t help but move. Keeps you super motivated!

Wonderwall A Song For Life

I just finished watching the latest episode of Girls and the end of the latest episode one of my all time favorite songs was being sung by Hannah, Wonderwall (clearly I grew up in the 90′s). I have loved Wonderwall for soo many reasons through out my life that it will be a part of my soul, if souls actually exist, until my untimely and probably alcohol/drug induced death. It may be because in the height of the song I was dating one of the only English boys I knew ever existed on Long Island at the time or the fact that I perhaps “stole” him from one of my best friends and to this day she has yet to hold a grudge about it, or how during the peak of my teen angst this song spoke to me with its whiny lyrics and obnoxious band members.
I am definitely not one of those deep individuals that find comfort, solace and meaning in music in a way that I care to know anything more than who sings the song so I can download  said song if I do not already own it. Wonderwall however is one of those songs that has been around long enough to be like an old friend because is never far from my mind, I know it like the back of my hand and it is always there to brighten my day. I feel like the song seeks me out if that makes sense. It is always there when I need it to remind me of older and better times yet the lyrics speak to me reminding me about the present and future…..my future specifically. There aren’t many songs in a persons life that can be so pivotal but for me, even as chiche as it might sound Wonderwall is just that. I stress this is not my all time favorite song but that some how, some where it just appears when I least expect it but always need it. It is always within my reach, yet I never have to grab for it. Every time I need it but dont expect it it is there and serves a purpose I didn’t realize it had.
This weeks episode of Girls spoke to me, in that Wonderwall was included in the last scene. Their situations had nothing to do with what I am currently feeling but that is what the song does for me. Yet, as a combination of all that is going on in the episode maybe it did represent my many different “personalities” that I feel I must have through my many facets of everyday life.
The episode did remind me of a time where my old super fab roommate and I did bathe together (this was a coed situation but we were both in bathing suits) and we had the best time ever. While being jealous that it seemed Hannah’s bath tub was larger than ours was I do remember night fondly and that Wonderwall might very well have been playing but besides that it brought me back to times where I was more assertive, stronger, and self assured and looked mighty fine in that bathing suit to boot! Wonderwall has been played during a rainbow of experiences in my life that never failed to bring me back to center where I belong.

My Fantabulous Winter Playlist

My new winter playlist is the best mix I have had yet! I can’t stop listening to any of the songs for even a few hours! The mix is ecclectic but completely perfect for my recent moods and to keep our warm during these silly cold days and nights.  I have been in such need for good tunes to life my winter woes! This playlist is on when I am cleaning, working out, cooking, driving! You name it.  These are only a few of my favorites that I think everyone should have on their lists.

I Was Made For Sunny Days makes me think of summer says that will soon be here! I am not sure why I am into folksy type music lately but whatever the reason I am totally diggin it. This song is light, airy and fun. Everytime it comes on I am in full on dance party mode (usually in the car but what can you do).

Eager For Your Love This song has made my life lately.  This is yet another pandora find that has become a favorite! This song speaks to me currently which is probably why I cannot get enough of it. The song has a longing sound feel to it but the music says something entirely different which is why I think I like it so much.

If you have never heard of The Bird and The Bee you are seriously missing out. My Love just makes me happy! I cannot stop dancing or singing everytime I hear it. There is no way around it. Once you hear it I promise you won’t want to listen to anything else ever!

A friend if mine introduced me to this song and I am beyond glad that he did because the beat in this song is just asking for a dance party or for you to free style. Thrift Shop by Macklemore, is almost cute if you are someone who appreciates the 90′s and the white rapper stylings that came with it. Anyone who is someone can totally drop it like its hot to this little diddy.

Gifts For Him

I am here to help with your holiday shopping fears! Cyber Monday is close and Black Friday which is exciting it can also be overwhelming and frustrating. I personally try to make lists beforehand so that I don’t get off track and over spend (yes, it happens anyway but you can avoid serious damage if you have a clear plan). I know guys are sometimes difficult to buy for because they aren’t as interested in pretty things as we are. Electronics are sometimes confusing and annoying so I try to stick to humorous gifts for the guys in my life. Humor makes everything awesome! It shows thoughtfulness and creativity, which a very important aspect of gift giving. Here are some ideas for hilarious gifts he might just love you for:

Finkle 5

Finkle 5

I think anyone who has a sense of humor likes them some Ace Ventura! This is a cute subtly funny shirt that men and women can appreciate. I can’t even look at it without laughing to be honest. I am pretty sure I am going to go home and watch it now as well.  The guy wearing this shirt can bring humor to strangers, it could very well be the answer to world peace, what a nice holiday gift it is!

Beer Belt

Beer Belt

Is he a big drinker? Does he love his beer? The Beer Belt could be the best gift ever invented in the history of ever…just sayin! If they made a cuter less camo one for martinis I am certain I would love anyone who bought it for me forever!!!  I am sure the receiver of this gift can do nothing more than love you forever as well if especially if you hand them this full of their favorite adult beverage.

Grill Sargent

Grill Sargent

I know this is quite similar to the Beer Belt above but the Grill Sargent is way too cool not to include! I am not sure what isn’t awesome about this in the least other then the fact that I really dislike camoflauge but it goes with the theme so what can you do? I know off the top of my head at least 20 guys that would kill for this! My father would probably punch a baby to get this bad boy and I honestly couldn’t even blame him if he did that is how hilarious/awesome this glorified apron is.

OOYL

OOYL

Is he a little bit of a nerd? Have you had to watch him play countless hours of video games or actually have to watch Star Wars?!? This may be the shirt for the nerd you love! It is also kind of super funny to boot.  I don’t know a single person that doesn’t think Yoda or the force isn’t funny.  Also for anyone who is tired of hearing YOLO shouted every 5 minutes can get some lamers back for their annoying behavior.

My New Fall Play List

Now that it is Fall I needed a new play list to get me in the mood for cooler weather and to get me in the mood for spending more time indoors. I have to really thank Pandora for introducing me to amazing artists I wouldn’t have otherwise ever found. I will forever be grateful. Here are some awesome songs on my Fall play list:

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

Lykke Li – I Follow Rivers is just plain sexy. There is no other way to describe the song. It gets me in the mood to get my little black dress on, find my hottest heels, get my hair did and give myself a slammin smokey eye (not a Jersey smokey eye). The lyrics are the sexiest part because her voice has this sound of longing/sex kitten. The mix is just perfect.

Lana Del Rey - Dark Paradise

Lana Del Rey - Dark Paradise

I have the biggest girl crush on Lana Del Rey!!! My current favorite song that I cannot stop listening to is Dark Paradise!! . I have probably listened to it over 1000 times at this point. Lana’s voice is amazingly sultry. All of her songs are great but Dark Paradise is my all time favorite at the time. I can sing it all day long.

Electric Guest - This Head I Hold

Electric Guest - This Head I Hold

LOVE LOVE LOVE Electric Guest’s song This Head I Hold!!! The upbeat music and the catchy hook keep me bopping in the car frequently! Very vintage sounding to me I think. I have been really into old school soulful music lately. I am not sure why but vintage everything has been on my mind. Electric Guest has other super good songs but this one is speaking to me currently and I will take it.

The Roots - Guns Are Drawn

The Roots - Guns Are Drawn

The Roots are a staple of my iPod playlists. Lately I have been into pimp sounding tunes and Guns Are Drawn is perfect for it. I feel super pimp when I listen to this song. I almost want to Kung Fu the crap out of someone when I listen to it.  The Roots are always fun for me.

Trina Turk Sale

I like to think that my style is a mixture of retro, vintage, classic.  I always tend to go for colors or styles from the past.  They are more interesting I think than many of the minimalist, very tight, and revealing styles of today.  There is something to be said about classic styles that leave much to the imagination.  I was never into revealing clothing even when my body was super skinny and in shape.  I was drawn to more vintage styles that had personality. You can check out the Trina Turk Fall Sale.

Hederen Cape

Hederen Cape

I never have been into capes. I feel like they are unflattering but the Hederen Cape is beautiful. Camel is one of my favorite fall colors and can be paired with so many outfits. Since the fabric for the cape isn’t patterned you can really wear it with almost anything. You can wear the cape all of the way through Spring which completely makes it worth the purchase.

Vienna Dress

Vienna Dress

The boat neck collar of this dress is really what I like. It is a simple detail with the trim and button but it adds a hint of vintage which differentiates the Vienna Dress from other sleeveless dresses. The modified herringbone pattern of the fabric is perfect for fall with those colors. You can pair it with boots pumps or even my fave BOOTIES!!!

Indio 2 Dress

Indio 2 Dress

The pattern of the Indio 2 Dress is very retro as is the cut. I generally don’t love Jersey material but for fall it is ok. You can pair this dress with knee high boots, booties or pumps which I love. You can wear leggings or stockings, scarf, hat you name it and the best part is you don’t have to weight it down with jewelry. In the winter I sometimes have an issue with wearing too much jewelry when you have a scarf hat and gloves.

Grace Kelly Long Wrap Coat

Grace Kelly Long Wrap Coat

How very Royal Tenenbaums of you Grace Kelly Long Wrap Coat. I would buy this purely to pay homage to my Gweneth. Sorry Grace I don’t really feel as if I know you. Add an obnoxiously large brooch, fluffy scarf and perhaps a cute hat and you are stylish for life! I wouldn’t normally be into a coat like this but pretending like I am as awesome as Gweneth is all the inspiration I need.

American Horror Story Asylum!

American Horror Story Asylum

American Horror Story Asylum

American Horror Story Season 1 was amazing! I didn’t completely get it at first but the ending was spectacular. I understand this is the kind of show you either love or hate but I sure do love it.
Now that Season 2 has begun I can’t help but hope it is going to be amazingly awesomer than Season 1. I love that Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto and my super crush Evan Peters are back. I could do with out Adam Levine but I get why he is on there, lest we forget Chloe Sevigny who never fails to be odd and creepy in the sexiest ways ever. I also appreciate the addition of Clea Duvall and Sarah Paulson perhaps lesser known actresses but ones I favor.
The description of the new season is soo creepy no one but FX could say it better:
“Set in 1964, American Horror Story: Asylum takes us into a Church-run haven for the criminally insane, ruled with an iron fist by Sister Jude, a nun with a troubled past. Inside this locked down facility, danger lurks around every corner. From Nazis and serial killers, to mutants and aliens, no one is safe inside these walls.”
The second episode of the season is on tonight which is beyond exciting. The set ups of the stories just from the first episode were intriguing I can only imagine how they will keep it up/top last season.
If Season 2 is as good as Season 1 I cannot even wait for Season 3 so lets all keep our fingers crossed there will be one because my life would be incomplete if there isn’t.
