DIY Body Butter Amazingness

DIY BODY BUTTER AMAZINGNESS

DIY BODY BUTTER AMAZINGNESS

I love DIY! I really love making beauty products at home. Some are not as fun as others but after many a long search for a DIY body butter that didn’t require spending a ton of money or breaking out industrial sized kitchen equipment I think I may have found the right one! I found this recipe on shewearsmanyhats.com. In this heat it is difficult to think about anything else but if you are like me and love to get yourself a nice tan it is important to keep moisturized. You can personalize this recipe to add difference scents or even herbs, fruits or vegetables. You can really fine tune it to your very own skin.  I cannot wait to make this.  I am waiting on some essential oils to come in and this weekend I am going to get right on this!

Ingredients
1½ cups of coconut oil, measured as solid
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons zest of grapefruit or other citrus or essential oil

Instructions
1. Mix all together until combined and smooth.
2. Transfer to a clean container with a cover.

**It is very hot out currently so make sure to keep it in a warm dry place so the butter doesn’t melt. You don’t want to be a slippery greasy mess.
**The mixture can become hard after a few days so make sure to mix it up before using it.

What Are You Watching This Summer

I can never seem to watch anything at the right time when it is on. I also never remember to record anything on DVR which is just plain frustrating I know but thank goodness for the inventions of Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime or else I would miss every important show ever in the history of ever! I also like being able to catch up on series I never had a chance to get into. That always makes me happy. There is sometimes nothing better than having a few days of sitting in bed, pigging out and watching a series from start to finish with no interruptions! Now for what shows I am obsessing over this summer…..hold on to your socks everybody:

Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 5 is my new addiction. I never really cared about the New Jersey or New York installments of the Housewives empire. Last season I caught the tail end and happened to see Teresa on Celebrity Apprentice and I actually liked her….on her own show….not so much. Either way I lurve lurve lurve it! I don’t know why I didn’t start watching it sooner. I am generally late to the party when it comes to television shows. I cannot keep up with all of the mind-numbing goodness going on on all of these different channels. I hope that this season brings with it just as much drama and crazy bs and any other season before it because boy do I heart these ladies!

Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove is one of the series that Nexflix put out on their own. It is oober good! The series description is “In the shadows of a rusted Pennsylvania steel town, the mangled body of a teenage girl is discovered. As they hunt for a monster among them, rumors mount and many of the eccentric residents become suspects, from the newly arrived gypsy family to the wealthy Godfrey clan. In the twisted world of Hemlock Grove, everyone hides a dark secret.” I really like the characters but was a little disappointed with the season finale. I expected a little more but it wasn’t terrible. I am hoping that the series was popular enough to warrant a second season so it can get bigger and better because there are some things that I need to figure out.  I do like that Netflix can get away with a bit more than normal network television which makes the possibilities for this series very interesting.  Let us all cross our fingers that season 2 if there is one is super duper awesome.

Long Island Princesses is glorious. I know that I might be biased because I grew up in Long Island and although I can’t really identify with this idiots I know I have seen them all over the place. I find it funny instead of trying to compete with the likes of the Jersey Shore by choosing the typical Italian you find on Long Island, which btdubs is never to be confused with Shore going/NJ living Italians EVER, they went a different route and chose the typical Long Island Jewish Princess which to be honest I feel is much more Jersey but what can you do. Either way every one of these hot messes I absolutely love to bits! Joey is my favorite and not because she isn’t the super rich girl aspiring to be like the others but because she holds her own and seems to have it the most together. I do think she has a bit of a chip on her shoulder but I am not completely sure I blame her. If you haven’t seen this train wreck of a show yet you are missing out on some amazeball summer fun!

Twisted

Twisted

Twisted is another ABC Family gem so far! They are just crankin out some good shows! I know I might be too “old” but I don’t care I love their shows. The only thing I really don’t love is Jo’s (one of the main characters) hair. It is just plain stupid. I am not even sure what look they were attempting to go for other than icky because it is just gross and unstylish in every way. Even the grunge era wouldn’t accept it. The shows description is “The new ABC Family original mystery series Twisted centers on a charismatic 16-year-old with a troubled past, who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood. He becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is surprisingly found dead in her home.” What is left out is that he recently reconnects because he has been away for the past 5 years for killing his aunt while his 2 besties were outside playing and no one knows why he did it. He has yet to ever tell anyone the reason. If they can keep the story going without it getting boring or too convoluted I am all in!

Summer Pedi Necessities

Everyone loves a good mani and pedi especially in the summer! Your feet are out all of the time. There are beaches, pools, parties and sandals galore! The warm weather and constant foot work are tough on feet. Unlike in winter where they are inside shoes and socks most of the time your feet are out and susceptible to heat and dryness much more than any other time of the year which makes the need for a pedi must more important and frequent. Here are some of my favorite products that I have been using for years that make my feet forever smooth and fabulous in between pedi’s.

Tatania Pumice Sponge Block (5 Pieces) is the brand many salons use and you can find at awesome places like Ricky’s NYC. I usually prefer to purchase this very set from Amazon.com because you get 5 blocks for anywhere between $5-$8 depending on seller and if you have Amazon prime you get it in like 2 days! You really can’t beat that. Most pumices are really just crap in my book. These are spectacular, last for a long time and you don’t even need to use scrub if you use them regularly. I actually use this every time I shower. I don’t go crazy but if you keep up with it and do it for a little everyday your feet don’t even have a chance to get dry and cracked.

The Body Shop Peppermint Cooling Pumice Foot Scrub 3.4 fl oz is a little pricey at $14 per tub but a little on your pumice really goes a long way. You can either cover your foot in it or put it on your pumice and scrub away the dead skin. You don’t need to glob it on unless your feet really need some work then maybe just the first few times have at it but normally the both combined do an excellent job at exfoliating.

Tweezerman Callus Corn Shaver

Tweezerman Callus Corn Shaver is what I use to make sure any rough spots at the beginning of the summer come right off. Your heels and certain parts of your toes and balls of your feet take the brunt of your weight. They have to be strong and build up resistance to the torture you put them through with the heels you wear. In order for those 8 inchers to not hurt as bad your feet must develop a callus here and there. In the summer those suckers need to be gone! That is what these shavers are for. Don’t freak out they won’t shave your foot off but they are a big help in a way that won’t keep you scrubbing your foot with pumice until the cows come home and leave then come home again.

Bath & Body Works Japanese Cherry Blossom Body Butter is a product I have used forever. I used to use The Body Shop but the prices have gone up and with Bath & Body Works having a sale practically every day it just makes more sense to use it. Body Butter is much more nourishing I find to my skin but not the greasy kind. I cannot stand moisturizing only to feel like a freshly greased piece of bacon. While I do not want dry cracked heels I refuse to have every piece of dirt and dust stick to them while I walk around during the day either.  You can use any brand of body butter you prefer and if you like greasy go for it but I find that greasy lotions and butters don’t really moisturize the skin they just lay on top of it.

bliss softening socks I know that $52 seems pricey but these puppies last for so long and are beyond worth it. I use them at minimum once a week. I do it right before I go to bed. I leave them on and generally wake up with them off but if you slather on some luxurious body butter then put these socks on your feet will never have felt better.  I have used brands by Bath and Body Works and Bliss and both are just as good.  if you have a brand you know of or prefer go right ahead.  I tend to be extremely brand loyal to what works unless they get crazy and start jacking up my prices which drives me cray!  I know some people who also use these socks with Vaseline too which works for them but bottom line these gel socks work wonders and are great year round for that fresh from the salon feel.

Strawberry, Avocado and Kale Salad

Strawberry-Avocado Kale Salad

Strawberry-Avocado Kale Salad

I love the summer for finding interesting mixes of fruits and vegetables. I feel like you can get away with odd pairings of fruits and vegetables more in the summer than you can in the winter because you don’t have to cook things so flavors and textures don’t have to mix in ways that might not taste/look so great. This salad happens to be super quick and easy but sound so fancy everyone will be very impressed when you serve it.

Ingredients:

1 bunch kale, stems removed and leaves torn or chopped
2 cups sliced strawberries
4 slices cooked/very crispy turkey bacon, crumbled
1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds
salt and pepper, to taste
1 ripe avocado, sliced

Directions:

1. Measure out about 6 cups of kale; toss strawberries in a large bowl.
2. Next, in a small bowl, stir crumbled bacon, Greek yogurt, sugar, vinegar, poppy seeds and salt and pepper together.
3. Leave dressing in the refrigerator to cool for a while settle together.
4. Top salad with avocado slices and mix in slowly
5. When you are ready to serve you can either mix in the dressing or leave it on the side for everyone to add as little or as much as they would like to their salad.

The Witches Daughter

I finished The Witch’s Daughter by Paula Brackston a few weeks ago and I loved every second of it! The book goes between the main character Elizabeth’s past and present lives, all which happened to be quite eventful. I find that often when authors try to do that I get confused as to what exactly is going on as well as how to keep track and or identify all of the characters but Paula Brackston makes very fluid transitions between the past and present. Her characters are easily distinguishable from each other and all have their specific place and time. I really enjoyed this book and once I got into it and understood the real story of what was going on I could not put it down! I suggest you get The Witch’s Daughter for yourself and you certainly won’t regret it!

Book Description:
My name is Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith, and my age is three hundred and eighty-four years. If you will listen, I will tell you a tale of witches. A tale of magic and love and loss. A story of how simple ignorance breeds fear, and how deadly that fear can be. Let me tell you what it means to be a witch.
In the spring of 1628, the Witchfinder of Wessex finds himself a true Witch. As Bess Hawksmith watches her mother swing from the Hanging Tree she knows that only one man can save her from the same fate: the Warlock Gideon Masters. Secluded at his cottage, Gideon instructs Bess, awakening formidable powers she didn’t know she had. She couldn’t have foreseen that even now, centuries later, he would be hunting her across time, determined to claim payment for saving her life.
In present-day England, Elizabeth has built a quiet life. She has spent the centuries in solitude, moving from place to place, surviving plagues, wars, and the heartbreak that comes with immortality. Her loneliness comes to an abrupt end when she is befriended by a teenage girl called Tegan. Against her better judgment, Elizabeth opens her heart to Tegan and begins teaching her the ways of the Hedge Witch. But will she be able to stand against Gideon—who will stop at nothing to reclaim her soul—in order to protect the girl who has become the daughter she never had?

Pretty Delish Pink Grapefruit Margs

Pretty Delish Pink Grapefruit Margs

Pretty Delish Pink Grapefruit Margs

I have been drinking pink grapefruit juice quite often lately. I am not sure if it is the warm weather or the fact that it is pink but I am loving it lately.  You know I love Summer, pink and pretty drinks! Margs are an essential part of good summer fun! They can be frozen or chilled, you can use a multitude of ingredients and can make them super pretty.   They are most definitely one of my favorite party drinks.  They are even delish when they are non-alcoholic.

Ingredients:

1 cup ruby red grapefruit juice (ruby red is sweeter and makes a better tasting drink)
1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice (about 4 limes)
1 cup triple sec orange liqueur
3 cups ice
1 cup silver tequila
1 lime cut in wedges, optional Kosher salt.

Directions:

1. If you prefer to rim the glasses take a lime wedge and rim, then dip in pink sanding sugar or you can use salt, if you do not like a salted or sugar rim you can sprinkle a touch of salt in each glass.
2. Combine the grapefruit juice, lime juice, triple sec and ice in a blender. Pour into a large pitcher (or just keep it in the blender) and pour in the tequila, stir.
3. Add pink edible glitter to the blender to mix in the drink or add it to the sugar to salt/sugar you rim the glass with to add some sass to your classy marg!

Fab Summer Beauty Finds

I have been dying to get some new make up for the change of season. I love all of the bright colors and florals I am seeing all over the place. Make up has become more and more of its own accessory. I used to hardly wear any nor was I able to apply it very well but with some practice and fun I have become quite adept at it and I love experimenting. I went on a mini shopping spree and wanted to share with you my fab summer beauty finds.

Givenchy Le Prisme Mono Eyeshadow

Givenchy Le Prisme Mono Eyeshadow

I know this is a contradiction to my above statement regarding my want of bright and floral colors but I just couldn’t resist. The Givenchy Le Prisme Mono Eyeshadow is so super hot and amazingly great for evenings out. The colors can be used year round which makes the fact that the pallet is $29 completely reasonable. You can mix and match these hot dark colors with any shadows you currently have to make the smokey eye of your dreams.

Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush

Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush

Now this blush trio screams Spring and Summer! I love these colors and the shipper of the Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush. They can match almost any complexion whether you mix them or use a shade separately. I mean I am generally distracted by pink shimmery things especially when they are in a cute shape but this is a very versatile piece of cosmetics if I do say so myself. Once again you aren’t limited to only using these colors in the warm months but they can totally be paired with some of your brightest outfits and at only $29 it is completely worth it since you can use it every day..

Cinnamon Plumping Lip Oil

Cinnamon Plumping Lip Oil

I really love lip plumper’s and I am not sure why but I also really approve of cinnamon flavored things. The Bite Beauty Cinnamon Lip Plumping Oil is going to be delish and is priced just right $22! Lip plumper’s I feel might have a slightly addictive quality to them….for me anyway. Plumper’s are excellent for the summer. The lips are possibly the only body part that are socially acceptable to be plump. If you aren’t a fan of showing off much of your body in the warm weather make your lips be the focal point of your ensemble with out giving yourself a permanent duck face.

Starry Eyed Liquid Liners

Starry Eyed Liquid Liners

Yes, I am that girl that loves glitter and loves to add it to anything I can. The Starry Eyed Liquid Liner is beyond amazing. The color called Drunk Dial is a must have for everyone on the planet! I am serious. The micro-glitter is used so it won’t irritate your eyes and the fact that it is a liquid liner you can use as much or as little as you want with out having to worry about it smudging. You have 9 sparkly colors to choose from and let’s not forget they are currently on sale at Too Faced for $15.75 right now!

Dirty Pirate Popsicles

Dirty Pirate Popsicles
Dirty Pirate Popsicles

Summer is almost to a close and that makes me sad! I love summer but this one just breezed right by me before I knew it. I sure do hope winter does the us the same courtsey. I feel like since summer is ending we need one last shabang before it is finally over! I am certain I am not the only one who feels this way! One thing your end of summer party must have are Dirty Pirate Popsicles! I found this recipe from endlesssimmer.com but decided to add a little of my own pizzazz to it. These are a necessity I feel like. Dirty Pirate Popsicles are a perfect mix between summer and fall!
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups Cola or Diet Cola
1/3 cup Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
1/3 cup Kahlua
1/4 cup Chocolate Frozen Yogurt

Instructions:
1.Place all ingredients in a large bowl and stir to combine. Pour mixture into popsicles molds.  (you could even place the mix in ice cube trays to make revers drinks if popsicles aren’t an option)
2. Freeze for approximately 2 hours or until mixture starts to solidify enough to hold a popsicle stick.

3. Insert popsicle sticks and finish freezing popsicles overnight. To release popsicles run hot water on the outside of popsicle molds for a 2-3 seconds
*I keep hearing a rumour that if you use cola that has gone a little flat the mixture freezes better . To quickly and manually flatten out the carbonation, empty out enough Coke from a 2-liter bottle to leave a 3-inch space from top of bottle to top of coke. Place cap back on and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Set aside to leave bubbles to subside.
